WV Book Festival (Charleston) & Writers Can Read (Huntington)

Just ten days away from the West Virginia Book Festival in Charleston, WV, where I will be selling my books and merch. I always love visiting our capital and connecting with readers there. Don’t miss it—October 19th, from 8:oo a.m. to 5:00 p.m., find authors like me selling books in the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center. Attend writing workshops, presentations, and more, including talks and signings from this year’s featured authors, Gregg Hurwitz, Joy Callaway, Gene Luen Yang, Mia Manasala, and Sadeqa Johnson. A few days later, on Monday, October 21st, I’ll be joining my friend and colleague Carter Taylor Seaton as the two Featured Writers at the Writers Can Read Open Mic Night Series in Huntington, WV. Be at Heritage Station by 7:00 p.m., and come with something of your own to read, if you want!

I always love visiting Huntington and can’t wait to see everyone there. I’m so glad that Michael Connick has taken over the reins of this monthly event, which was formerly organized by Carter.

David Baldacci among writers headlining the Lewisburg Literary Festival for 2024

Lewisburg, one of my favorite WV small towns, is home to cute little shops, art galleries, caves, restaurants, an indie bookstore, and, every August, the Lewisburg Literary Festival, one of my favorite events. This year, come out on August 2nd–3rd for this totally free festival that brings nationally known authors in to speak—past authors include Garth Stein, David Sedaris, and Jeannete Walls. This year, the featured Mainstage Authors are Ronni Lundy, Patrick Bringley, Victoria Christopher Murray, and David Baldacci.

The Lewisburg Literary Festival is FREE

Lewisburg is a beautiful, charming small town in southern WV, home to cute little shops, art galleries, caves, restaurants, an indie bookstore, and, every August, the Lewisburg Literary Festival, one of the highlights of my year. This year, come out on August 4th–5th for this totally free event that brings nationally known authors in to speak—past authors include Garth Stein, David Sedaris, and Jeannete Walls. This year, the featured Mainstage Authors are Lynda Rutledge, Silas House, Eric Eyre, and Joy Callaway.

My lil Poe boy watches over me as I write

Emily and I recently took a quick weekend getaway to historic Berkeley Springs, WV. Located in the eastern panhandle, its warm mineral springs became a huge attraction as our country was started, leading to its founding in 1776 by George Washington as America’s first spa. Its original name was "Bath," meant to be a competitor of sorts to the English city of Bath in Somerset. While I’ve never been to its English counterpart (based on a quick Google, Somerset’s Bath looks much more impressive—sorry, Berkeley Springs), we did enjoy our short stay at the historic Country Inn as well as our appointment at Berkeley Springs State Park’s heated Roman Bath House. There, for a period of time you can reserve a private heated pool of natural mineral water all to yourself, or to yourselves, if a couple, like Emily and me. Emily chose to wear a swimsuit, but wanting to get the most out of the experience, I of course went in "full Roman," a phrase I came up with when we got there, which I’ll leave you to interpret for yourself.

So, for obvious reasons, there are no pictures of Emily and me in the bath. However, I do have pictures of this cool little Edgar Allan Poe figurine we found at Jules Enchanting Gifts just across the street. Check out this neat little guy!

Super cute video of my niece reading LITTLE ONE

My three-year-old niece decided to “read” Little One to my sister, who sent me the video. She is very cute and has some funny things to say about the book. I am using this video with permission from my sister and my niece, but I am keeping their names out of YouTube and this website to protect their privacy. Watch the video below and give it some likes if you want!

NEW SHORT FICTION: Read “The Puddle Girl of St. George” in the Anthology of Appalachian Writers

“The Puddle Girl of St. George” is a unique kind of ghost story set in the beautiful, haunting St. George, West Virginia. I’m very proud that it was selected for publication in the annual Anthology of Appalachian Writers.

Even though this volume (Vol. XI), featuring guest editor Karen Spears Zacharias, was technically published back in June, I’ve been waiting to post about it until there was a working link for ordering the book. For some reason there was a listing for it on the Shepherd University Online Bookstore for a while now, but it has been listed as Out of Stock until this month. Well, better late than never—you can order it now!
