I have signed with Bloodshot Books for my novel Schafer, to be released in 2021.
Bloodshot Books is a well respected horror press which has published books from writers such as Mark Morris, Chad Lutzke, Somer Canon, Stephen Laws, and Jason Parent.
Some of you may remember me working on this book. I posted an earlier excerpt from the novel’s opening on my website back in 2017 (see “Prologue to an unfinished work”). I had just begun the first draft of the manuscript at this time. It’s hard to believe that three years has passed since starting that book!
Schafer is a coming of age horror tale set in Augustus Valley, WV during the early 1990s, inspired primarily by Edgar Allan Poe’s short fiction featuring mesmerism/animal magnetism. You might also catch a whiff of Ray Bradbury as you read.
Something about Augustus Valley’s new doctor rubs Danny Hinton the wrong way—especially when Dr. Schafer takes a special interest in Danny’s single mother. But when he recruits his friends to try to expose Schafer’s sinister motivations, the hypnotist convinces everyone that Danny is crazy and needs serious treatment. As Danny begins to doubt his own sanity, Schafer’s charms on the townspeople raise him to an almost god-like status. Indeed, it seems that the doctor has become powerful over death itself.
It is such a pleasure working with Bloodshot Books to finally present this story to you. I really love this one, and I think you will, too.
